I have said that my favorite sessions to work on right now are high school seniors. But there is a 2019 senior that I have been shooting for the last 7 years that I have learned to work effortlessly with. Katie and I have some sort of weird artistic connection when we get together for a session. There is something about the way she shows up to our sessions, with her own goals in mind but willing to do what I direct. She is willing to jump over things, climb up or sit just about anywhere we find. We have been in the trees, laid in the leaves, rested on the sand, waded in water, hiked through parks, hidden in alleys and darted across streets. We have wandered some pretty amazing places together.
She always comes "dressed for success", her words. Katie defies my fashion knowledge, so that part is all on her. From ball gowns to bathing suits, scarfs to sandals and denim to polo, I trust her judgment in picking the perfect attire for our sessions. She plans ahead, brings extra outfits and comes accessorized when necessary. Katie has a stylist mother who brings all the props we might need and is equipped with essentials like lip gloss and pins. Some of the the things we have used in her sessions are balloons, chairs, fairy lights, plants, lanterns, flowers and blankets.
Katie has some signature facial expressions that we always get photos of and we have some funny out takes that will never see the internet. She keeps those hidden at home for future bouts of laughter. She is always game for a serious look, too. Some of my favorites of Katie are ones where she seems to be reflecting on life, still and serious.
I am not sure what type of sessions we will wrap up with as her senior year of high school comes to a close. I know I am already planning for prom, summer at the beach and my first road trip to do a session with her in Vermont, where she will attend college. Thank you, Katie, for being part of my inspiration!
